Reminder that slavery is still legal in America.

Also known as community service; a regular prison activity around the world.

Free labor that isn’t voluntary is called slavery

I don’t know about slavery, I think this term is more fitting: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penal_labour

The 13th amendment defines it as slavery.
“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist in the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”
It’s slavery.

My point is literally proven in the quote you’ve just posted.

“… except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted…”

That’s my exact point proven, I feel inclined to thank you for doing my work for me.

Yeah. It’s slavery. Is that what you were trying to prove?

in the constitution, as you quoted above, legally people that have been convicted of a crime lose their rights as citizens of America. I’m not saying that is right or wrong, but it is legal.

It’s legal slavery

Exactly. It’s legal. If you’ve a real problem with that use your right as an American citizen and submit a bill.

Submit a bill to the people that are enslaving them. I’m sure that would work. We all know people with power over others give it up willingly, especially when it makes you more money.

“nothing will happen so I won’t try”
Nice defeatism, pussy. I bet that’s what MLK Jr. thought too

Why are you people like this

All I saw was “I don’t think it’s slavery” in a discussion and quote entirely about how it’s slavery.

“Yes, it’s slavery but at least it’s legal…”

“Yes its slavery but they totes deserve it bcuz reeeeeasons!”

Nah. Imma take a hard stance that slavery is bad in every case.

‘Slavery is legal so it’s fine’ is an… interesting take on the ethics of forced labour.

I’m not too great at law stuff, so I gotta ask: What makes the difference between community service, which is an accepted punishment (as far as I know), and slavery, which is seen as bad? Not trying to be snarky–I’m genuinely wondering.

Nothing in any qualitative sense.

If the government decides what a crime is, and criminals don’t have rights, then the government decides who has rights. How can a country that calls itself the “land of the free” be okay with the government deciding who has rights?

And if you defend modern day slavery because it’s legal, you would have also defended slavery 150 years ago, because that was legal too.

Community service is something you do when you’re not in prison! I can’t fucking believe this is a discussion.
